Abide With Me                                                저와 함께하소서

Abide With Me; fast falls the eventide;                                  저와 함께 하소서 속히 날 저물어 가고

The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide.                       어둠  깊어가니 주님 저와 함께 하소서
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,                            도와줄 사람 없고 위로자도 없을 때

Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;                              내 사는 날 속히 지나고  
Earths joys grow dim; its glories pass away;                       이 세상 영광 빨리 지나네

O Thou who changest not, abide with me.                            변챦는 주여 함께하소서


Not a brief glance I beg, a passing word;                            
But as Thou dwellst with Thy disciples, Lord,
Familiar, condescending, patient, free.
Come not to sojourn, but abide with me.

Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings,
Tears for all woes, a heart for every plea—
Come, Friend of sinners, and thus bide with me.

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile;
And, though rebellious and perverse meanwhile,
Thou hast not left me, oft as I left Thee,
On to the close, O Lord, abide with me.

I need Thy presence every passing hour.
What but Thy grace can foil the tempters power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;
Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness.
Where is deaths sting? Where, grave, thy victory?
I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;
Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies.
Heavens morning breaks, and earths vain shadows flee;
In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

스코트랜드 출신의 찬송 작가인 라이트 목사의 대표작이다.

그가 영국의 Lower Brixham의 가난한 어민들 사이에서 목회한지 24년, 폐럼으로 악화 일로에 있던 그의 건강은 한계점에 도달햇다. 1847년 12월 4일  그는 이탈리아로 요양을 떠나기 전 가까스로 강대상에 올라 죽음은 누구에게나 닥치므로  그것을 예비하라는 내용의 감동적인 고별 설교를 한 후 해변을 거닐었다.

그 때  그의 영혼 깊은 곳에서 기도가 감동적으로 흘러 나왔다.  다음날  그 기도시를 친적에게 주고  떠난 그는 이탈리아에서 못 미친 프랑스에서 별세했다.

그후 유고집에 실린 시에서 윌리엄 뭉크가 곡을 붙여 만든 것이 이 찬송시이다.

 

Abide With Me is a well-known Christian hymn composed by Henry Francis Lyte in 1847, though the lyrics are usually sung to William Henry Monk's melody Eventide rather than Lyte's original music. It is popular across many denominations, and was said to be a favourite of King George V and Mahatma Gandhi. It was sung at both the wedding of King George VI and that of his daughter, who would go on to become Queen Elizabeth II. Since 1927 it has been sung before the kick-off at the FA Cup Final and Challenge Cup Final. It is also often sung at Christian funerals.

Lyte wrote the words to his poem while he lay dying from tuberculosis, and lived only three weeks after its completion.
